💻 Intune Policy refresh intervals Vs. Config Refresh in simple terms

These are similar-looking terms that perform two different tasks and this quick nugget is to unpack what they do.

⚡Policy Refresh Intervals⚡

This is the standard way for the device to check in with the Intune service to receive the policies and settings.
When the device is enrolled with Intune for the 1st time, notifications will be sent to the device to receive the policies.
After that, the device will be checked in with Intune periodically to receive the config profiles and policies.
If a device doesn’t check in to get the policy or profile after the first notification, Intune makes three more attempts.
If the device is offline or switched off, it will be attempted in the next cycle. The same applies to checks for noncompliance, including devices that move from a compliant to a noncompliant state. Intervals can be varied depending on the platform.

⚡Config Refresh⚡

Config Refresh on the other hand was introduced recently for Windows 11 devices. This will be used to apply the previously applied policies to the device. This is a good step towards keeping the devices hardened and up-to-date at all times with the policies you configured.
The device can be online or offline and in this, the device will not be checked in with the Intune service but will apply the policies that were received to the device in the previous check-in.

⚙️setting: Refresh Cadence

This refresh cycle can be adjusted using the Settings Catalog’s “Enable config refresh” and “Refresh Cadence” settings.
Refresh Cadence will be between 30 – 1440 mins.

⚙️setting: Pause Config Refresh

As a part of this, you can now pause the config refresh of the device if you are in the middle of a remediation or testing. This “Remote Action” can be done by heading to the device. “Enable config refresh” setting must be ON for this to work. There is a time window you can set when applying a pause with a maximum of a 24-hour window.
